Choosing a Reef Safe Sunscreen

Back in June the Belize Barrier Reef was removed from UNESCO’s list of endangered sites due to Belize’s efforts to protect its waters from ocean-based industry. While this was a major step to conserving the reef and all its marine life, it is still important that we work to protect it. After all, it is the second largest in the world!

While sunscreen is a must-have during any tropical vacation, common sunscreen ingredients are actually known to bleach and kill corals. The four main harmful ingredients are: oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor. As much as we recommend lathering up before hitting the beach or heading into the water, we ask that you consider a reef safe sunscreen.

Two brands in particular that we recommend are Reef Safe by Tropical Seas and Sun Bum. And if you can’t find some at home before you pack your bags, you can pick it up in our gift shop! That way you can take care of your skin while also taking care of our reef system. Thank you for thinking of our sea!
