Exciting News: Belize Safeguards Barrier Reef!

June has been a big month for Belize’s marine life, starting with the banning of oil operations in its waters followed by the Belize barrier reef being removed from the list of UNESCO endangered sites.

Belize is the first developing country to ban oil extraction in the name of protecting the ocean—a major step for Belize and one that not only protects the reef system that we so enjoy but also safeguards ocean-based industry. Because of the permanent ban, UNESCO believes the reef no longer belongs on the list of endangered sites, and we couldn’t be happier!

To learn more about the change in the barrier reef’s status, we invite you to read the article by the BBC News here.
