The Battle of St. George’s Caye

Today we celebrate The Battle of St George’s Caye, which took place from the 3rd until the 10th of September in 1798.

That’s right: it was 218 years ago now. So, what makes this battle so special?

Well, some would argue that because it was the first time that Baymen and slaves fought side-by-side with the British that it led to more equality in what was then British Honduras, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. Yes, it did lead to more equality, but it took a full century before The Battle of St George’s Caye would become a holiday (September 9 and 10), and local Creoles would campaign to recognize the slaves and Baymen as “true patriots”.

These days, the 10th of every September is recognized as The Battle of St George’s Caye Day in memory of our ancestors.
