Whether you are traveling to Belize and Ambergris Caye for the first time or the 10th time, there’s bound to be questions that you still have about your trip; what to bring, is there a doctor nearby, is the water safe to drink? Here are a few Travel Tips that might take away a little bit of your trip anxiety. But not to worry, if you’ve forgotten something or need assistance, we’re always here to help.

Medical Care

Medical care on Ambergris Caye is typically at least $50 USD. If you need medical care, please contact the front desk and we will be happy to assist you.

Getting Here

It’s recommended to fly into Ambergris Caye from Belize City. From there we will pick you up. You can also take a water taxi from Belize City. Check-in is at 3:00 PM and check-out is at 12:00 noon. Please see Getting Here for more details.

Tipping

It changes wherever you are traveling, so don’t worry about not knowing. In Belize a 10%-15% gratuity is appreciated especially if the service is good.

Water Safety

The tap water in most areas of Ambergris Caye is treated city water. However, to avoid any unpleasant situations– or if you have a sensitive stomach—we find it’s better to stick with bottled water.

Insects and Bugs

It is highly recommended you bring insect repellent with you as insects in the tropics are a way of life. And if you are prone to bites, an after bite remedy is also recommended. While you can find both in nearby San Pedro, they will not be as cheap as you might find at home at your local supermarket.

Insurance

There are a number of medical insurance plans you can purchase before your trip. Please look into this while you are at home and before you travel to Belize. While the cost of medical care is quite low in Belize, it is still recommended you purchase insurance before you leave for your destination.

What to Pack

You’re in the tropics, so you’ll need to pack cool and comfortable clothing. This is a very casual part of the world– no need to dress up. If you pack one outfit for a special dinner, that’s fine; but you can relax the rest of the time. Footwear is a particular concern Sandals and flip flops are fine for the beach, however, you’re going to need sturdy walking shoes for walking into town or for outstrips and adventures. Also, be sun smart. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are essential; and take additional precautions if you are fair to light skinned. Remember, you are probably going to be in the sun most of the day, every day.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Ambergris Caye is the easiest – by foot. However, if you want to get places a little quicker, consider using a bike (available at Victoria House). You can rent a golf cart which is the most common way people get around San Pedro and Ambergris Caye. There are also taxis available if after your walk to the grocery store the bags are a little heavy to carry.
